Well the Long period between free agency and training camp has since come and gone throwing us right in the middle of the yearly preseason hope for the taste of a Superbowl. It has been sometime since I have posted due to a career change. With that said I want to rewind a month or so and take you through my V.I.P day at Kim Kelly’s annual youth football camp at our second home; One Bills Drive. I took the opportunity to get some of your questions for Jimbo himself around the Billievers Network. I had the chance to Meet Jim formally for the first time. He is much bigger in real life then you would think…as most NFL players are, but the one thing that got my attention was the good old fashion manshake. I am not a small guy myself and I like to think I have a firm grip, but after I locked hands with our Hall of Fame QB I felt like screaming uncle. I arrived at the Camp bright and early to meet up with my contacts and take a tour around One Bills Drive. If you are a Bills fan and haven’t had the chance to see the ins and outs of Ralph Wilson Jr. Stadium, I strongly suggest you don’t pass up the opportunity. The first thing I did when I stepped on the field was marvel at our own little version of a colosseum. I then took the time to go around and sit in every section to see the different views for fans on Sundays. I have to say my favorite view was from the 200 section. This is a great area to sit and if your looking to buy a game or two this season I strongly suggest you target this section. I have season tickets in the 113 section myself and I felt a bit envious of the holders in the 200 section, but before I continue to rant about seating we’ll get back to the discussion at hand.

While touring the stadium I got to see the newly planted outdoors practice field. This is the first year of Jauron’s tenure where a request for the field to be replaced was granted (or asked perhaps). I am going to read into this myself and say the coaching staff has some serious plans for practices outside late in the year. This maybe a minor detail to the naked eye, but the once 3 point spread Vegas gave Buffalo for playing at home has since perrished after consecutive home losing records the past two seasons. This has to change! I was also informed there has been discussion about upgrading the turf although nothing definite had been decided.

After meeting Jim and his brother I had the chance to ask him one of your questions which was ” What is your best memory of being a Buffalo Bill?” Jim responded with: “My best memory as a Bill was the first time I ran out of the tunnel here at the stadium. I was overwhelmed for the opportunity and proud of all my hard work finally paying off.” I was a bit surprised by his answer, because most fans would think the first time they went to the superbowl would be at the top of his memory strand. He also commented on the potential game winning drive of their first superbowl performance to the tune of ” One of my best memories was driving the team down the field into field goal range on the edge of accomplishing everything we worked for as a team. As I walked off the field I felt like I had finally done it” Soon after that he commented: ” But sometimes things just don’t go your way.” AKA Wide Right.

After that I had the chance to sit in on his speech for the kids in one of the luxury suites in the stadium. I was looking forward to asking him some questions after, but god love those kids at the ripe ole age of 14. They actually managed to ask most of your questions here on the Billievers Network. I’ll do my best to list the Questions I received from ALL D on your behalf with his answers.
“…I’d like to know with the current Brett Favre situation going on, after Jim retired from the Bills, how close was he actually from signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers that off-season?”

When asked whether he ever thought about playing for another team Jim responded with ” Never” “I couldn’t imagine having played for another team. Buffalo gave me the chance and stuck with me all the way.”

“Ask him if he ever thought about trying to be an official member of the Bills coaching staff as a quarterbacks coach or heck, even offensive coordinator. When asked about his future with the Bills: ” I remain close with Mr. Wilson and look forward to that relationship continiung.” I am not sure what that means, but take it how you want it.

“You may want to ask Jim how his life has changed since being enshrined into the HOF and how/if that has given him a larger platform to raise awareness for newborn screening programs.” Kelly also touched on his accomplishments off the field. He specifically mentioned his son that passed away and how it made him realize what life was all about. Kelly~ ” I am extrememly proud of the Buffalo area for their contributions to are charity programs.”

Jim was also asked about his thoughts on the Bills this season and the acquisition of Terrell Owens. He replied with: ” I am excited about this year’s team” ” I believe they have a good foundation in place and can be competitive.”

He was then asked about his opinion on T.O to which he replied ” My opinion doesn’t really matter, but one thing I know is it reminds me of when we signed “Jimmy” Lofton.” “That helped our offense tremendously.” ” Regardless of hear say one thing I know is that guy can play football.” ” I also hope it works out for more than one year here in Buffalo, his career speaks for itself”.

Hmmm… and Optimistic Kelly on the T.O signing. I am not going to lie, I loved every second of his discussion about Owens. I actually agree on his comments because you can’t become a franchise cancer when there has been a tumor on the organization for the better part of a full decade (as far as the playoffs are concerned that is). Jim still lives in the Buffalo Area out in Holiday Valley (Elicotville, NY.). Your questions about his intentions for partial ownership investors in place for the team were unfortunately unaddressed. After speaking with my contacts there seemed to be a notion that if Kelly had no intention of being a part of the Bills organization at some point he may have long ago moved to a better year round climate. I was also impressed with the camp as well. Anyone looking to get their children into some good football camps look no further. Well thats all I have on my Adventure to One Bills Drive and Some of the quotes may be slightly off because I can only write so fast, but you can take from it what you like. I know I certainly did!

Thinking about the “State of the Buffalo Bills” right now is giving me a headache. My personal life is not anymore out of control than normal outside of cyberspace, yet I feel completely confused about this year’s Bills team. Maybe that’s good.

It’s hibernation time for the team for everyone but T-O, Donte, and Maybin who seem to tweet more than all the birds at our place at 6 AM in the morning (it gets loud around here).

So many posts I read talk about how stacked the Bills are at skill positions. This may prove to be true, but both lines have HUGE Qmarks and that is where I think the success of this year’s time will ride upon.

I wrote a thread recently at BBMB about how the defensive line’s performance was as big a concern to me as the newly tossed together Oline. But this no-huddle (depending on how much they use it) is going to really be dependent on how well conditioned and talented our defensive line proves to be this season.

Such a weird season. 50th anniversary season, all the T-O drama, MNF opener against the Patriots*, strange schedule with so many late afternoon games, Ralph’s induction to the HOF along with Bruuuuuuce, more Qmarks about the starting QB, and who knows how the AFC BEAST will fare?

The only thing I am certain about is if the Bills can’t win big in their own division, they are toast. 0-6 still makes me feel disgusted with this coaching staff. I’ve tried to be open minded about JaYawn, but his style has never inspired me much.

However, like Ralph, I’ll give the guy one more year to see if he can ever get past 7-9. I thought last season starting at 5-1 and Brady out for the year that the Bills REALLY had a chance. So not only do they blow it, they can’t even win a game in their own division. How pitiful is that?

Here are my biggest areas of concern for this team this season:

Maybin and Shawn Nelson intrigue me as far as what they might or might not bring to the table during their rookie year. Obviously Wood and Levitre need to make a quick adjustment to the NFL, but so does Maybin.

Beating the Patriots*. This has to be the year the Bills beat NE at least once. Got to get that monkey off the Bills back. Must be done this season, and it would be the coup de grace if they could pull it off in the opener. That’s their best chance, IMO… before BellyBoy gets too much “film” on this team. Really don’t like the guy, but I have to give it over to him as being the best in the business as far as taking advantage of other team’s vulnerabilities.

Trent’s head is still giving me headaches. We all know he wasn’t the same almost the rest of the entire season (except the Chargers game). This retooled offensive line better give him some protection, or I fear another concussion might put him in serious trouble.

I’m sick of listening to my spouse tell me that after that concussion, Trent might not EVER be the same as read and react time. If he doesn’t regain that “poise” that made him stand out early on, then the Bills will be back out hunting for another leader at QB.

The first fifty years of the Bills has been quite the ride. More downs than ups, but perseverance through adversity is what defines a Bills fan, IMO. But the times are a’changin’ and this old Bills fan is probably not going to change with it.

New ownership for the Bills continues to beat like a drum, louder and louder in the background noise in my head. So, I’m looking forward to training camp when my mind can stop wandering and I have something concrete to focus upon.

One thing I’ve started doing is trusting my instincts. Thanks to many Bills fans here and elsewhere in cyberspace, I’ve learned a great deal about the game.

Coupling that with a pretty good sense of intuition about human behavior and I have found that I’ve been right about a lot of things I see EARLY during the preseason… that DO carry over to the regular season.

One time soon I will post my thoughts and observations of T-O, and what comes along with having T-O on your beloved football team. He talks a lot about how he was raised and influenced by his grandmother. So was I, so I can relate to a lot of the comments he has made about growing up with Granny.

I see him in a very different light since I’ve watched him interact about being a Buffalo Bill. I’m very intrigued by the possibility regarding how his drama will play out in WNY.

Later, homies. I’m grateful to all of you who give me a chance to reconnect with Bills fans from all over the world.

Most Overrated Team

The Miami Dolphins

Last year was magical yes, but like most things magical, last year was more of a deceptive illusion than anything else. A trick that with close examination might be uncovered for what it really is underneath all of the dust and extraordinary spectacles, disappointingly ordinary.

This is the same team that squeaked by many bad opponents and were often the beneficiaries of maddeningly poor play by opposing offenses. Here are some of those games and score lines to name a few:

SEA 19 @ MIA 21
OAK 15 @ MIA 17
MIA 16 @ STL 12
MIA 16 @ BUF 3
SF 9 @ MIA 14
MIA 38 @ KC 31

This is 6 wins alone in games where the Dolphins were lucky to come away with a victory and were the beneficiaries of extremely poor play by opposing teams or favorable late game mistakes to squeak out wins over bad teams. These are wins, scenarios, and match-ups that the Dolphins will not have the fortune to work in their favor again.

My prediction for the Dolphins is a 6-10 year.

Most Underrated Team

The New York Jets

This was a close call between the Bills and the Jets but there are some key reasons that the Jets are the choice here.

For starters, while the Dolphins appeared much better than they were, the Jets made themselves constantly look worse but you could see that at times, when they put it all together, they could be a dominant team.

Success starts in the trenches and the Jets are strong at the line of scrimmage on both sides of the line. The Jets had some key off season pickups defensively with Lito Sheppard, Bart Scott, and Jim Leonard to name a few, not to mention that while the Bills are being forced to endure another year of Dick Jauron at the healm, the Jets did the smart thing and got rid of Eric Mantarded and brought in defensive mastermind, Rex Ryan.

This is more than enough to name the Jets the best defense in the division, and possibly one of the best in the NFL. If you want to debate this argument, feel free to comment, and I’ll give you many reasons why.

The key question marks the Jets have are at quarterback and wide receiver. They have the running backs, they have the offensive line, and they have an above average set of tight ends despite giving up Baker.

I’ll begin with wide receiver. The Jets lost Lavernius Coles to free agency who was considered their #1. The fact of the matter however is that Lavernius Coles is no #1 wide receiver and his play has declined significantly over the last 2 years so the loss of Coles is no great loss at all. Many at the Jets organization are extremely confident that the loss of Coles can be completely negated in house with the emergence of Chancey Stuckey and David Clowney who is a burner who got injured in the preseason last year after two straight team leading performances including a 163 yard multi-touchdown day on limited playing time. So I say, “Coles who?”

As far as quarterback goes, it is my opinion that Brett Favre did absolutely nothing to help this team, in fact his demise was the team’s downfall last year. If rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez struggles and throws a bunch of interceptions…well…there won’t be much of a difference from last year since Favre led the league in interceptions, especially over the 2nd half of the year. The Jets also have a strong defense and a strong running game to help protect the rookie and not force him to do anything more than manage games.

My prediction for the Jets is 8-8 give or take 2 wins depending on quarterback play and close late game low scoring finishes which there should be a lot of for this team this year.

Most Overrated Player

A few names come to mind like Wes Welker and Chad “duck tosser” Pennington, but I am going to go with Thomas Jones, the starting tail back of the New York Jets.

I’ve watched a lot of Jets games and have seen a whole lot of Thomas Jones and despite the statistics I am not impressed. This is a guy who often lacks burst, benefits from huge holes created by a very good offensive line, and is often outperformed by his backup in Leon Washington. There was a game last year where Leon Washington was given a carry, broke it for about a 60 yard TD, and then never touched the ball again in the second half.

With the early drafting of Shonn Greene, the popularity of Leon Washington, and the contract holdout, Thomas Jones might begin to see his carries go down a bit this year.

This is a guy that went to the pro bowl to represent the AFC and he probably isn’t even the best back on his own team. To satisfy the Bills fans on this board I must also include that I’d take Lynch or Jackson over Jones any day of the week.

Most Underrated Player

Names that come to mind are Lee Evans, Fred Jackson and Leon Washington but once again I’m going to go with somebody that many might not put in this category and throw out the name Darelle Revis, CB, New York Jets.

Outside of Nnamdi Asomugha, Darrell Revis might just be the best corner in the NFL. Just ask Terrell Owens what he thinks of Revis. In his rookie season, Revis was beaten for touchdowns only twice all year, both on fade routes, one was caught by Terrell Owens and the other by Braylon Edwards.

What I did is take the rankings section and add up the rankings. If the team was ranked 1st in one category that is +1, if the team is ranked 4th that is +4, and then I divided by the total # of categories to determine an overall rating, with the lowest overall rating being the best.

The results were pretty interesting:

Jets – 17/8 = 2.12
Patriots – 19/8 = 2.38
Bills - 20/8 = 2.5
Dolphins = 24/8 = 3

As you can see, the Jets had the best (lowest) overall rating which really shows you exactly how good of an all around team the Jets have managed to put together. Where the Jets downfall lies is in the weighting or importance of their largest weakness, which is at the quarterback position. If the Jets strike gold with Sanchez they could easily overtake the AFC East next year by drafting a top WR in the 1st round to help their other weak point. This is a big “if” though.

Also, you can see that my assessment of the Dolphins holds true. I tried to be as fair and impartial as possible and the dolphins still ended up way behind the rest of the division. There is one flaw though that I’ll point out at the end of this post.

As far as the Bills are concerned this assessment shows that the Bills are closing the gap a bit between themselves and the Patriots but a gap still does exist, but a lot of the pieces to the Patriot puzzle are getting older, whereas a lot of the Bills pieces (especially on the offensive line) are young and untested and could easily vault up those rankings.

The main flaw in this assessment though I’ve just realized is that I left out an important category, and that category is coaching, and when I say coaching I mean how the organization is run as a whole, on game days, in practice, all the way up to the top and this part of the assessment hurts us:

Coaching/Organization
1. New England Patriots
2. Miami Dolphins
3. New York Jets
4. Buffalo Bills

Now here is what the new analysis looks like for overall rankings:

Overall Rankings
1. New England Patriots - 20/8 = 2.5
2. New York Jets - 20/8 = 2.5
3. Buffalo Bills - 24/8 = 3.0
4. Miami Dolphins - 26/8 =3.25

On Thursday June 4th, Ralph Wilson Jr. revealed his presenter for induction in to the Pro Football Hall of Fame this year. Wilson has Selected ESPN’s Chirs Berman to do the Honors at the August 8th Ceremony at Canton’s Fawcett Stadium in Ohio. Ralph Wilson Jr. received the honors of being named to the Hall of Fame on the 50th Anniversary year of the Buffalo Bills. Wilson has been a cornerstone owner in the NFL for 50 years.

When Berman was announced as Wilson’s presenter most Bill’s fans were surprised by Wilson’s choice. Many thought Hall of Fame coach Marv Levy would be Wilson’s first choice. Levy re-joined the Bills organization as the acting general manager in 2006 following the controversal Tom Donahoe Era. Levy was signed to a two year contract as the Bills General Manager. Levy was brought in to help a front office in transition led by Vice President Jim Overdorf. Levy had input in Buffalo’s draft choices and player personal while Overdorf handled the free agent acquistions and contracts.

The Bills Fan base was a bit surprised when Levy resigned as Acting GM in 2008. Since Marv left One Bills Drive, little has been heard from or about Marv Levy. When The Bills signed Owens media outlets approached Marv on his take only to find out he didn’t know already. This was the final peice of evidence that Marv truly was off-board at One Bills drive. Now just a few months later Wilson selects Berman to present for him at the induction ceremony and questions are rasied as to whether there may have been a falling out between Levy and Wilson. This is not the case. Levy left Buffalo confident he did what he needed to and that Dick Jauron was the next version of…well Himself- “It has been an experience that I have enjoyed immensely,” Levy said in a statement released by the Bills. “Despite an unprecedented number of season-ending injuries, Dick Jauron, his coaching staff and an admirable core of high-character players are heading in the right direction.”

“If my contributions to their efforts have been meaningful, I then take my leave from One Bills Drive, thankful and gratified,” said Levy

Following Marv’s Statement Wilson released a statement on Marv’s resignation- “I will always be grateful for his service,” Wilson said. “When we needed new focus and direction, Marv improved our organization’s morale, attitude and environment: All of that, plus the stability we needed to move forward.”

I have to admit, when I first saw Berman was presenting for Wilson I was a bit shocked as well. As I sat and thought about Wilson’s choice or lack there of, it became clear to me why Berman is Wilson’s guy this year. Berman joined Espn in 1979 about a month after their founding. Since then Berman has been the most notable media enthusiast (outside of the late Tim Russert) for the Buffalo Bills. Spanning almost 30 years of media work and 6 time national sports caster of the year awards, Berman is pretty popular among sports fans. No one has done more in the media for the Bills than Berman. Most notably he coined the phrase “Nobody circles the wagons like the Buffalo Bills.” I have to admit I make time to watch prime time after a Bills win just to hear him say that. It is also important to note Wilson and Berman have been friends for years. Wilson has always been a fan first owner and selecting a fan to present for him makes sense. I also have to believe Russ Brandon had something to do with this. That guy loves the media market attention in Buffalo anyway he can get it.
Ralph Wilson is long overdue for the Hall and its nice to see what would probably be the fan’s choice asked to present for him at the Induction ceremony this year. Berman had this to say when informed he was Wilson’s selection: “Fifty years in sports, there’s only one constant —Ralph Wilson is the owner of the Buffalo Bills,” Berman said in a statement. “What Mr. Wilson has done for pro football and for the city of Buffalo and Western New York, it’s hard to put into words. He remains in it for the same reasons he got into it in 1959—he loves the game of football, and that’s apparent in everything he does. It will be an honor to have a bird’s-eye view to watch him be inducted in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, especially this year, in the 50th year of the old American Football League.”

It is also important to Note that Berman has been the master of ceremonies for the Hall of fame ceremonies the past ten years. Not only will he be the master again this year, he has the honors of inducting his sports role model into the Hall of Fame: Ralph Wilson Jr.
