In a long interview with PuckLife Magazine about his hockey career, former Sabres and Islanders head coach Ted Nolan has played the race card again.
“Whenever this comes up, it’s always they said this or that. You know, never has anyone stood by what is said. Things like I was sleeping with player’s wives, getting drunk at practice, I mean, I think that is a directly racist comment. If someone could just stand by it, fine, it would be my word against theirs, but we can’t even do that.”
Nolan was asked to explain the rumors surrounding his relationship with Dominik Hasek but wouldn’t go any further than the following: “There’s certain things that could be said, and there are certain things that are better left unsaid. I know the reason. And it’s just one of those things I’ll write in a book when I’m all done. But, it wasn’t a very pretty situation”
Nolan also addressed why the rumors about the issues he has dealing with General Managers: “You know, that’s one of the bad misconceptions out there, that I don’t get along with GMs very well, it’s just one of those things. You know, me and my wife have been married thirty years. We have disagreements all the time. Does that mean I’m a bad husband? I don’t think so. Does that mean that she’s a bad wife? I don’t think so. Sometimes you have disagreements; sometimes you have to agree to disagree. Muckler and I had differences of opinions on certain things, but to say I can’t work with him? You know, I’ve worked with a lot of people – I worked with Robert Irving in Moncton, Jimmy Rutherford in Hartford—and it’s unfortunate, but one little thing happens and people blow it way, way out of proportion.”
